Name: Sapphira
Dimension: 300x300 mm
Colours: High viscosity studio acrylics
This was an exciting piece to work with! Below you can see the process from beginning to end :)
The process:
• Created a luminous and vibrant background along with the sketch.
• Begun with the stairs, cage and exotic bird.
• Filled in the skin with white and tried figuring out how to make the dress soft and apply the nose.
• Designed the dress in a gradient (i wish this one was real).
• Blended a skin tone and slowly began working on the eye.
• Most focus on the eye (iris) giving in depth and details.
• Blend blend and blend, it took longer than expected with the eye shadow! *phu*
• Shadows to the stairs (3D).
• Hair, eye lashes, bigger bird, back strap on the dress and closed eye on the girl.
• Lips + signature.
• Fixed 2 swings in the cage and some bars on the door to the bird cage.
• 3D flowers with a little bling and water drops.
Long version short (but it still turned out long :P)
♦ Deep blue eyes: Often related with water, skies, oceans and a very popular colour. Captivating colour with the detailing of the eyes. It has a charm to it and it is believed that people with blue eyes are youthful, kind, sincere, attractive, open with their feelings, outgoing, peaceful, direct and got an enormous energy and gift of insight.
♦ Purple lips: The darker the tone the more regal the personality. Purple lipstick symbolizes psychic, power, luxury, magic and mystery. So it conveys a sense of depth, dignity, professionalism, empowerment and pride in womanhood. This colour is a feminine, romantic yet strong and confident. It's a colour that represents royalty and nobility.
♦ The "Celestial" Sapphire: These gemstones were mined ~7th Century BC in India. There was a belief that Earth is set on this gemstone, because of which sky is blue. The ancient Egyptians associated this stone with the "eye of Horas" (the eye in the sky). (which also fits with the eye on the painting). It is a symbol of the heavens, and said to guarantee good health, innocence, truth, and preserver of chastity. Sapphire is the traditional birthstone of September. Historically, it was the birthstone of April (painting started in April). It is the zodiac stone of Taurus. It has been popular since the middle ages and, according to folklore, it was believed to protect loved ones from envy and harm. Favourite among priests and kings, this stone was considered as the symbol of wisdom and purity.
This could go on but i have to draw a line :P i think you can puzzle yourself to a bigger picture :)
Cheers!

What's the story behind the painting?

♦ The brown stairs: Brown is the colour of Earth (wood/trees). It is a very grounding and a getting-something done kind of a feeling to it "the handyman". In my mind brown was more natural to the blue background in comparison to black. Brown is also associated with success, creativity, wealth and prosperity. The stairs also has strokes of orange and for me orange is a vibrant and happy colour with a dash of spontaneity. It is also a warm and energetic colour. By adding a little orange to the stairs it certainly lifted up the whole staircase.
